Parts of Speech and Word Order

In this unit, you are going to get to know the parts of speech, which are the different categories of words and their functions within a sentence. You will have the opportunity to practice identifying where each part of speech belongs. Afterwards, you will be able to arrange words in the correct order to construct grammatically accurate sentences.

Essential elements and word order

top burger bun = object (noun, e.g. a burger or pronoun, e.g. it)
pattie = verb (actions of a person or other agent, e.g. to eat)
bottom burger bun = subject (noun, e.g. the woman or pronoun, e.g. she)
=> The woman eats a burger. / She eats it.
=> subject - verb - object

Optional elements and word order

ketchup = adjective (describes nouns, e.g. hungry, tasty)
=> The hungry woman eats the tasty burger.

cheese = adverb (describes how we do sth., e.g. quickly)
=> The hungry woman eats the tasty burger quickly.

pepper = where sth. happens, e.g. at the table
=> The hungry woman eats the tasty burger quickly at the table.

tabasco = when sth. happens, e.g. in the evening
=> The hungry woman eats the tasty burger quickly at the table in the evening.

prepositions = describe where or when sth. is located or happening, e.g. at, in, on, after, before, under, over

=> place before time

Other optional elements

conjunctions = connect different parts of the sentence, e.g. and, but, because
=> The hungry woman eats the burger, but she doesn’t like it.
or
=> The hungry woman eats the burger and drinks a glass of water.

interjections = expressions of emotion, e.g. Wow! Oh!
