In this unit you will learn how to deal with writing tasks and how to improve your style. You will be shown what specific skills are needed in order to write a coherent, interesting text.
5 Steps to improve your writing:
1 Focus on what’s important
Goal: Write more naturally and precisely, especially in informal texts (e.g., postcards).
2 Be clear
Goal: Make your writing easy for the reader to understand.
3 Vary your sentences
Goal: Create variety, rhythm, and a clear sequence in your writing.
4 Use active voice
Goal: Write more directly, personally, and vividly.
5 Use transitions (e.g. after that, then, later, the next day, etc.)
Goal: Make your text sound natural, connected, and easy to follow.
In general, it is important that you read the task carefully to be sure what is required of you. Because practice is key, check out the creative exercises on the next page.
