Es muss wohl ein Zufall gewesen sein, als Menschen vor gut 5000 Jahren erkannten, dass sich grünliche Kupferklumpen durch Hämmern in beliebige Form bringen lassen. Als sie es schließlich schafften, Metalle aus erzhaltigen Gesteinen herauszuschmelzen, konnte das härtere, aber gut schmiedbare Eisen seinen Siegeszug antreten.
Metalle sind das wohl universellste Material zur Herstellung von Werkzeug, Waffen und Schmuck. Sie haben die Entwicklung der Menschheit so tief greifend geprägt wie kaum ein anderer Werkstoff. Und die Entwicklung geht weiter. Heutzutage stehen nicht Kupfer, Eisen und Stahl, sondern vorwiegend die leichten Metalle im Fokus der Forschung.

The blacksmith Georg Petau tries to use a bloomery to make iron in the same way the ancient romans did. Iron ore is heated to 1100°C in a charcoal furnace, and iron and cinder are separated. The slag flows out of the bloomery. Inside, big lumps containing about 2 kg of iron are left behind.

A modern blast furnace runs around-the-clock, is never shut down and produces about 10,000 tons of pig iron - the very raw iron that all forms of high-quality iron and steel are based on - per day. It operates much faster and more efficiently however. The iron ore is heated in several stages, and in the end, liquid pig iron comes out at the bottom of the furnace.

Steel was the material of the 19th and 20th century. Its triumph began with air: In 1856, Henry Bessemer had the idea to blow air into the liquid iron. This changed the iron's carbon content, and thereby improved its properties. The result was steel, a material superior to regular cast iron: Steel can be rolled and rarely fractures.

In our modern society, hardly anything happens without the shiny material. Cars, machines, tools, buildings - steel is used everywhere. Steel is flexible and elastic and regains its previous form if deformed. It is strong and nearly unbreakable.
